Spoon boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That’s impossible. Instead… only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Then you’ll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself. (Quote from the movie, ‘The Matrix‘)
We believe what we see. We see colors everywhere and Color is a visual perceptual property derives from the spectrum of light. Light is the voice of atoms and molecules consists of wave packets called photons. The variations in frequency give us the different colors. Light is produced by the excitation and de-excitation of electrons within the atom. Visual information can be defined as a pattern which communicates spatial relationships like form, size, shape, color, intensity, location, movement, and behavior. The physical eyes see by focusing reflected rays of light onto the retina. These optical impulses are transformed to electrical impulses to brain. No actual light enters the brain (that’s why you can able to imagine). Hence it is not really our eyes that see, but our minds.B3 When we look at the world around us, we think that we see objects, but in reality we are seeing the light reflected by those objects. If we see blue, then the object absorbs all frequencies except blue light. We see spaces between them because those are not in visible color range. In ancient days, yogis use this trick to make them invisible. A yogi tries to grasp or suspend the energy that is responsible for perception and make himself invisible to others.
I want to quote Ilaiyaraaja’s lyrics which correlates the color and thoughts through a song, where two persons (one is blind) share their metaphoric views. It goes like this (translated from Tamil to English):
A question is raised by the blind person,
“What is the color in mind, when you feel the breeze?
What is the color of thinking, when the moon shines?”
And the normal person replies,
“It is full of hovering colorful thoughts
And the colors will change according to the thoughts”
Since, it is ‘Holi’, the festival of colors; I thought it is right time to share something about color. During Holi we put colors on others to breaks all barriers of discrimination so that everyone looks the same and universal brotherhood is reaffirmed. But what is message need to be carried with it? I can put in another way, what is the color of your mind? If color is a property of an object that is exhibited since it does not absorb a particular frequency, then the color mind denotes the character and the behavior of the person. Everyday the colors (people’s activities, situations, etc.,) are thrown at us, they question is how we react? Did we get angry, jealous, or any other emotional state? It is upto us how we react to those which will constitute our color of mind (our character). One of our professors used to say, when you fail on something or don’t get the desired thing, you got the opportunity to build or mold your character right there. Thus the truth is, it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself. I feel everyday is Holi for us and this celebration is the key start to the truth.
